What might sound like science fiction is becoming reality: nanoparticles synthesized from crustacean exoskeletons capable of encapsulating natural substances that induce plant growth and regulate water loss through leaves. The result? Larger seedlings with enhanced drought resistance.
Breakthrough Applications in Agriculture
Nanotechnology combined with Nature-based Solutions is revolutionizing how we approach agriculture and reforestation:
- Enhanced Plant Growth: Bacteria-inoculated seedlings show significantly superior growth compared to non-inoculated ones, resulting in greater carbon sequestration capacity and drought resistance.
- Improved Water Management: Nanoencapsulated nitric oxide donors effectively induce root development and regulate water loss through leaves, improving drought resistance in tree seedlings.
- Sustainable Pest Control: Natural compounds delivered through nanoparticles provide effective pest management without the environmental damage caused by synthetic chemicals.
The RESTORE Project: Innovation in Forest Restoration
While reforestation is an essential Nature-based Solution for climate change mitigation, it isn’t sufficient on its own. More sustainable practices are imperative to reduce CO2 emissions and explore new forms of carbon sequestration.
A collaborative project between Brazil, France, and Germany called RESTORE (natuRe-basEd SoluTions to imprOve REforestation) focuses on developing Nature-based Solutions for forest restoration. In the state of Paraná, it forms part of a New Research and Innovation Arrangement (NAPI Biodiversity), funded by the Araucaria Foundation.
Microorganisms: Nature’s Hidden Allies
In a forest, plants associate with beneficial microorganisms that can provide nutrients or protective molecules. The RESTORE project aims to:
- Isolate these microorganisms from native forests
- Cultivate them in vitro
- Characterize them to ensure absence of pathogenicity
- Determine their functional characteristics
Materials Science: Natural Solutions Amplified
Complementary strategies to boost plant growth and resistance include using plant growth regulators produced by the plants themselves to resist abiotic stresses. These molecules can be associated with nanomaterials that, due to their diminutive size, interact efficiently with plant cells.
Chitosan Nanoparticles: A Natural Innovation
A notable example is the use of chitosan nanoparticles, a biodegradable and biocompatible polymer synthesized from chitin. Chitin is found in the exoskeleton of insects, crustaceans, and also in the cell wall of fungi.
This natural polymer can be used to create nanoparticles that encapsulate nitric oxide (NO) donors, a crucial signaling molecule for plants. Signaling molecules transmit information from outside the cell to inside, allowing the cell to respond to stimuli.

The next crucial step is advancing to large-scale production of inoculants and biomaterials. Currently, these approaches have been tested in laboratories, greenhouses, and nurseries, but the challenge lies in expanding to industrial volumes and validating these technologies under real field conditions.
At the same time, communicating the benefits of these Nature-based Solutions to society and the productive sector is essential, especially in regions where the use of synthetic compounds—the famous agrochemicals—is still prevalent.
